Recognized as a digital music thought leader, Deborah Newman founded MusicStrat in 2008 to combine her deep experience in the music, television and video businesses with her interest in copyright and digital media. MusicStrat advises music/tech companies on copyright, content licensing and digital distribution. Newman was an early pioneer in digital music in the mid-90s, serving as VP of Marketing & Sales at online retailer Music Boulevard and later Head of Marketing for early subscription services FullAudio and Pressplay. Prior to that, she spent 20 years at CBS Records/Sony Music. In 1984, she helped launch Sony Music Video Enterprises, a new division charged with producing and distribution longform concert and documentary programming to the worldwide television and home video marketplace. Her work with artists such as Billy Joel, James Taylor, Public Enemy, Wynton Marsalis and others garnered numerous accolades, including a George Foster Peabody Award and two CableAce Awards.
