Today’s commercial artists are also small- or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Artists assume creative control of these businesses and delegate the remaining business responsibilities. Today’s managers serve as an artist’s CEO and must have an understanding of all four areas of the music business: recording, live, publishing, and branding. During this session, we will check in with managers on the fine tuning they are making to their artist's businesses in 2017, asking which factors never change and what regular adjustments required to keep pace in 2017? We’ll explore whether the pace of digital means that artists are circulating the commercial track faster or whether lowered barriers-to-entry are resulting in an overcrowded track and slowing the pace at which sustainable careers are established? Our panel of experts will round out our discussion with a wider look at the music business, touching on non-music industry partnerships and which blends of fuel … Talent R&D and access to finance … are needed in 2017’s music industry engines.
