The advent of streaming is transforming the process of record chart compilation. In Scandinavia, the early adoption of streaming is leading to a virtual dominance of the retail music market. This streaming dominance is making the capture of music sales through traditional channels (physical, download and mail order) an even greater importance than in the past in order to preserve balance in the charts. It is also essential to capture live sales data from independent retailers who lack in-house automation as well as data from the rapidly re-emerging vinyl market. This session will not only discuss the use of entirely automated systems in several countries to capture both electronic (streaming and download) sales data and actual physical sales, but also describes solutions in employed in the large UK market, as well as in Scandinavia, to ensure that the live sector is properly represented in the official charts.
